Contrary to other providers offering multiple protocols, Avast VPN only offers one protocol: OpenVPN over UDP with AES-256 encryption. This is a remarkably strong encryption algorithm that is classified as military grade and is the same cipher that is used by banks. Avast also uses different encryption technologies, such as ChaCha20 or RSA-2048.
Avast VPN on desktops and Android will automatically select the best protocol for your connection. It first tries connecting to OpenVPN and then switches to Mimic when that is unsuccessful. From my experience, this isn’t the most intelligent mechanism for choosing a protocol. It would be better to offer the user the option to select a preferred protocol and tell you how it has worked.

Avast’s headquarters are located in the Czech Republic. This country is GDPR-compliant, and is not a member of any Eyes Alliance surveillance group. The company keeps connection logs that can be used to identify users and the „no-logs” policy does not prohibit this. They accept payment via PayPal and credit cards, but they do keep billing data. They also allow a couple of cookies to track your actions on the internet.
